Hi, I’m Kap
I wrote Dads Jazz Cookbook to provide fully complete, nutritious meals that are easy to prepare and keep well in the fridge or freezer for leftovers. It’s great for anyone who likes to eat great food and cook, but wants time for other things in life, too! And every recipe is paired with a legendary jazz album.
The idea to pair jazz albums with recipes followed as naturally as syrup on pancakes. My dad fed my early interest in jazz by gifting me The Dave Brubeck Quartet’s acclaimed Time Out (see: Take Five Pancakes). I loved that album, still do, and have played it countless times for every occasion: cooking, road trips, working, introducing friends to jazz, and more. I often find myself suggesting jazz to peers and want to help others discover this quintessentially American creation which arose out of hardship.
Jazz’s influence is audibly present in modern hip hop, pop, and rap. Check out Kassa Overall, Janelle Monae, Domi & JD Beck, Kendrick Lamar, Theo Croker, Billie Eilish performing with Christian McBride, for some solid examples. However, it remains under-appreciated as a genere. In our house, we follow modern jazz legends like Christan McBride, Joshua Redman, Cécile McLorin Salvant, Terri Lyne Carrington, Jazzmeia Horn, and esperanza spalding. We pay attention to rising stars like Nubya Garica, Savannah Harris, Kassa Overall, and Lakecia Benjamin. We catch their tours or festival appearances when we can and keep up with their new music, which we share with our daughter.
